My Journey…

Let’s not mince words: John Rodríguez needs a kidney donor as soon as possible. In late 2018, John received a strong warning from his doctor, who said he wouldn’t live to see 2019. Facing the prospect of his untimely demise, John assessed his options. His doctor assured him dialysis was the only way forward.

Since then everything has gone well, but now John faces another challenge with his quest for a donor. John’s father had a chain of record stores in Puerto Rico. This solidified John’s love of music. He began his career working at radio stations in the ‘80s. The work led him to create Brutal Noise, a record label, in 1990. In time, John found himself looking for an outlet for all his skills and passions. So in 1994, he founded FullSwitch, a full one-stop interactive agency serving brands and providing image creation, design, and post-production for web, online marketing, and social media development. In 2016, John opened METLKID, clothing stores in Chicago for the rocker at heart. Throughout all his endeavors, John has strived to leave a positive mark.

John’s health problems began in 2000. He’d been a diabetic for most of his life but the condition had gone undiagnosed for various factors. The doctors found considerable damage, in particular to his liver, eyesight, and kidney. After beginning dialysis in 2018, John not only survived, he thrived. From 12 daily pills, he’s now down to zero. This sudden change has given him a new lease on life and now he sees things under a different light. While the short-term goal is to find a kidney donor for John, he plans to use his skills and influence to build a platform where others like him can have access to resources to find the donors they so urgently need.

“I want to be a vessel to help other people,” he said. Once his transplant is complete, John hopes to find peace and continue to grow. The METLKID stores will serve as headquarters for all efforts designed to help those in need of organ transplants. “I’ve had a great life,” he said, “I want to give to others more and more in the years I have left.” With the help of his friends and family, along with the good people that join the cause, John will have his chance to do precisely that and so much more.
